The Shore

During the summer months on the east coast everyone I work with, both in my days at Applebee’s and at Auto Dat, talks about going to the shore. It is a weekend getaway, party, and vacation hot spots. Literally, everyone goes to the shore. Here are Lindsey and my trips there.

Atlantic City:
When we went there last August I certainly wasn’t thinking “Beach”. Who does? They think Gambling, Boardwalk, Monopoly, and Prostitute Serial Killers. Apparently, also think “Beach” no matter what your judgment tells you. So, for our Mini-Honeymoon we first stopped to pick up the Deathly Hallows Harry Potter book seen here:

And off we went. We booked out $300 Super 8 hotel and drove straight there. Located the Catholic church along the way, we dropped our stuff off at the room and went to the beach. We laid out reading our books, yes we each bought a copy of the HP7, and then we went for the water. Now, I must admit, swimming in the ocean with those waves are pretty awesome. You can either let yourself be leveled by a wave, dive into the wave, or dive with the wave and ride it to the beach. We swam for a while, then went to the room, changed, I went to church, Linds buried her head in her anti-God witchcraft book and waited for me to come back. We then walked the entire boardwalk looking for some seafood place, which we never found, and ended up eating at a restaurant on the beach, which was decent at best. Then went gambling a little bit and then found a place called “The Irish Pub”. Got to love a bar over 24 hours a day, just like Super Wal-Mart.

Walked home and we both read. Lindsey actually finished the book, I slept. Woke up the next morning, walked around the boardwalk and I swore Linds ruined HP7 for me, ends up she didn’t, and thinking back at it I’m just confused as to her reaction after saying some things she said about the book. But we ate at the Trump casino, gambled, and eventually headed home. It wasn’t your model honeymoon, since most was spent reading our being crabby at each other.

Wildwood:
Last weekend Dominic and Megan (forensixx) asked if we’d go with them to Wildwood, NJ. Several of my colleagues had spoken kindly about the place, and we were happy to go. So, Sunday morning we pile in their car, drive the 2 hours to the shore, and find our spots on the beach. Wildwood’s beach was significantly larger than Atlantic City’s, since this is known as a Beach place, not a gambling place. This time I was reading “Caddy for Life” by John Feinstein. Which, if you love golf, you’ll love this book. It’s a sad book about Tom Watson’s caddy, Bruce Edwards, who after years on tour finds out he has ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Just the author explaining the disease makes me nearly cry. Whatever, read the book. It’s good. So, we all lay out and read or just soak up the sun, and then hit the water. Unfortunately,if you want to swim in the waves you are wading in 2 1/2 feet of water, instead of 3-4 feet like at AC. Which means it wasn’t that good, a lot of that must’ve had to do with the time of day we were there. So we swam, laid, swam, changed, and ate at a seafood place down the boardwalk. We were absolutely exhausted and sat in the delayed traffic for a while, during which I completed my book. It took a could showers but I think I finally have the salt and sand out of my hair.

The shore is definitely nice. I have never claimed to be a water person, I have sensitive feet which sucks to walk on sand/rocks/shells, sensitive entire body which doesn’t like cold water, and swim very poorly, which makes you drown in oceans. The formula equals = not a fan of water. But, I have changed my tune a bit since my first ocean experience. But hey, us Rausch’s (and Nelsen-Rausch’s (gay)) are ocean people, what can you do?
