Timmy
So the day after the anniversary I took work off because Uncle Timmy came to town for the Rbk High School basketball camp. Apparently this camp is a big deal in the college world. How do I know? Because that’s about the only way you’d get Timmy to come all the way to Philly, he’s a Mountain West guy, and you know how they are.
So Linds and I were going to Arcadia because Linds had to work and I had to do nothing. I was literally going to do nothing while she prepared the lab for everyone the next day. As we were driving up to her school the main chemistry guy said there was no class that day so we immediately headed down to Philly to find Tim.
Note: We think Tom Tom sucks.
So we manage to get to Philadelphia University (mascot: Rams) and picked up Timmy. After the usual: what’s going on in your life, discussion we took him immediately to Genos. Of course on the way he stressed that he hates Cheese Whiz and that he was afraid something like a cheesesteak would send him directly to the bathroom. No word if it did and he said it was good. Now the Tom Tom thing. The thing literally wanted me to drive through the other lane’s traffic to a walking bridge that just barely fits a vehicle. If you’re dumb enough to follow Tom Tom’s direction and go on the bridge you’ll see metal posts making sure you can’t continue along that path mostly so you don’t run over runners/bikers/walkers/homeless people.
Oh, I’m that dumb. I was on that bridge. It was very hard to back up off that bridge and time it so we can get up to speed on the main road without any Philly road rage coming out of the cars waiting for us. We got Timmy back to the camp a few minutes later than he hoped, but it didn’t seem to be a big deal.
Now is where I think I might lose the interest of some of my viewers, but I’ll get you back at the end.
That night Linds and I came back to the camp to watch a couple games. I saw arguably THE best talent in the country play for a few hours. Basically every kid there was recruited by some D-I team and many of them big time schools. In fact, the top 5 ranked HS players in the country were all there. Now, many of them will start dealing crack and shooting people on the street, so that’s now the big news, it was the college coaches.
I saw the following (if I knew how to do a bulleted list, I’d insert it *here)
First was Tim Floyd of USC, formerly of Chicago Bulls and Iowa. When I saw him I realized that I was going to see some big time coaches and wanted to take pictures. Linds was embarrassed…I put the camera away. Plus, I was like 5 feet from him and all other coaches I would’ve wanted pictures of, and that’s just awkward.
I saw Jim Boeheim, Mike Montgomery of U CAL, coach of George Mason, Lewt Olson of Arizona, top assistant coach of UNC, Matt Dougherty former head coach of UNC, Villanova head coach, Calapari of Memphis, Billy Donovan of Florida, and the top dawg Mike Krzyzewski of the infamous Duke and this years Olympic Men’s basketball coach.
Oh, and Montana State, BYU, UNLV, and Colorado St of the Mountain West conference. BTW, Tim is the coach of Colorado State. It wasn’t hard to find out where any of these coaches were from because they all proudly wore their school polos. I asked Timmy for mine, he said the polos are reserved for people that actually come out to Colorado. If I suddenly get rich, I’ll go there just for my shirt.
Afterwards we went to a lil Mexican food spot for drinks and food. I could tell Linds and Timmy were getting bored of me asking basketball questions (an example that I remember: when you’re scouting a young guy what are some of the things you can teach and things that they just have. Answer: Bryce, I don’t have a good answer for you, its different for each player, it all depends on their attitude and if their willing to work.)
So we changed the topic to the family. We talked probably for an hour about life growing up for him, typical family drama, and just random Misc. topics.
All in all, we had a lot of fun, I was a bit star struck at the camp, but at the end of the night it was really nice catching up with Timmy since obviously opportunties to catch up in person with any family members doesn’t come around much.
Oh, and Linds said something really Sciency and dorky.
Bryce: Wow, do you know who was sitting directly behind you?
Lindsey: No, but I think you’re going to tell me.
Bryce: Jim Boeheim, the head coach of Syracuse
Lindsey: (mockingly) Wow. I probably have some of his DNA in my hair from him breathing behind me.
Bryce: Wow. You are such a dork.
Lindsey: I am a scientist, what do you expect.
